The Broken Promise of Anonymization – Professor Martyn Thomas

Professor Thomas explains why anonymizing data doesn’t work —Gresham College

We’re often promised anonymity in return for giving our data. Professor Martyn Thomas, the new IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology believes that this is a hollow promise. Any data set that is rich enough to be useful is also highly identifiable. Here he explains how.

Martyn Thomas is an internationally recognised expert in software engineering who holds visiting professorships at three top Universities including the University of Oxford. Beyond his academic posts, Professor Thomas is often called upon to be an expert witness and also to advise Parliament on cyber security matters. Gresham College is proud to have Professor Thomas as our first IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology.

Professor Thomas will deliver the six lectures of the newest Professorship over the 2015-16 Academic year. The series will examine the place off computing in modern society, and what we should hope will be its future. From pressing issues like cyber security threats to possible futures with driverless cars and intense automation, this series is hugely important and focuses on issues that affect the entire world. Join Professor Thomas for his series entitled ‘Living in a Cyber-Enabled World’:

Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of their five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from their website. There are currently over 1,800 lectures free to access or download from the website.
